Emergency Prep Go Bag
Why a go bag
A go bag is a small, ready-to-carry kit for the first hours of an emergency. It helps you leave quickly and gives you a little time to think clearly.
Keep it personal
Build the bag around the people, pets, health needs, mobility, work, and climate in your household. Choose a comfortable container and check it twice a year. Replace expired items and update sizes, contacts, and medications.
Emergency needs
Water and a way to carry or purify it
A first-aid kit and needed medications
Flashlight, extra batteries, phone charger, and a whistle
A change of clothes, sturdy shoes, warmth, and basic hygiene supplies
Masks, gloves, sanitizer, and a small tool
Copies of emergency contacts and a simple local map
Food and water
Pack several easy-to-carry servings that do not require cooking, plus a manual can opener if needed. Include water for each person and water-purification tablets or a filter. Plan for dietary restrictions, infants, and pets.
Critical documents
Keep protected copies of identification, insurance, prescriptions, medical information, emergency contacts, and financial or household records. Store a small amount of cash and a backup of important phone numbers in a waterproof sleeve.
Containers
Use labeled, resealable, waterproof containers or pouches. Keep documents and medications protected, and organize the bag so the most important items are easy to reach. A grab-and-go bag should be light enough for you to carry.
